Is a Reduced Syllabus Good for the Children? 

It is seen that the rising pandemic had called upon the need to cut down the curriculum, since last year.  During this era of pandemic, most schools have reduced the curriculum by at least 30% in order to make up for classes lost during the lockdown. The decrease in the curriculum has continued this year as well. As a result, the question that arises in the minds of many is: Is the reduced syllabus beneficial for the children? Will it be a boon or a bane? 

We have attempted to answer this question, here, in this article. But, whatever the syllabus students can now refer to the books of the respective state boards, like the Maharashtra Board students can refer to the Maharashtra State Board books to study for the exams. 

Is the Reduced Syllabus a Boon or Bane

Can this reduced syllabus disadvantage the students of Class 12 when they move on to college? Certainly not. Reduced coursework does not affect the competitiveness of the students. Furthermore, through this reduced syllabus, facilitators can now focus more on the concepts as well as their application. 

Schools in India are heavily reliant on rote learning and focus on overloading students with factual information. The majority of schools do not gain a conceptual understanding of how the knowledge is applied, because of this. Consequently, with the syllabus now being reduced, the facilitators will be able to focus not just on enabling students to understand the concepts but also on teaching them how to apply them. 

By reducing the syllabus, facilitators are now able to make online learning more engaging and interactive. These engaging methods that facilitators use to drive learning will also result in the students’ increased concentration and learning experience. 

Furthermore, by adopting project-based learning, students will have a better grasp on what they are learning. Additionally, students are also equipped with independent learning skills that enable them to deal with any challenge they face. Ultimately, schools have the authority to choose the mode of learning that best suits their philosophy and learning objectives. 

Meanwhile, this reduced syllabus has been met with a mixed response. In spite of the loss of classes, some welcomed this move wholeheartedly, claiming it would allow for the completion of the syllabus for the academic year, but others were sceptical about how it would affect students aspiring to higher education. 

Despite all the confusion, most of the students, parents and teachers agreed upon one thing, that is the reference textbook. Students were advised to focus on learning the concepts as presented in the earlier texts in order to have a good understanding of the subjects. So, for example, Students of Class 12 Maharashtra Board were urged to be thorough with the Maharashtra State Board 11th Books PDF. This also helped them to face the exams more fearlessly and with confidence. 

Due to the fact that most parents were still unsure about sending their children to school and on the chance of them missing classes, a reduced syllabus was the most effective way for the children to prepare for their future classes without having much of an impact on their studies.
